The journey begins on land, though adult sea turtles spend almost their entire lives at sea.
Natal Homing: Through an extraordinary sense of geomagnetic navigation, adult females return to the exact regional coastlines—and often the exact beaches—where they hatched years before.
Creating the Nest: Under the cover of night, the female crawls above the high-tide line, digs a body pit with her front flippers, and uses her hind flippers to scoop out an egg chamber.
The Clutch: She lays roughly 80 to 120 eggs (resembling soft ping-pong balls), fills in the nest to camouflage it from predators, and returns to the ocean, leaving the eggs to incubate independently.
The eggs remain buried in warm sand for roughly 45 to 60 days.
Temperature Determines Gender: Sea turtles have temperature-dependent sex determination. A popular saying among marine biologists is "cool dudes, hot chicks"—cooler sand produces predominantly male hatchlings, while warmer sand yields female hatchlings.
